The Guiness cable car in Sa Pa, a popular tourist destination in northern province of Lao Cai, has begun transporting tourists to the peak of Fansipan Mountain, considered the top of Indochina.
The cable car is the world’s longest three-rope cable system, at a length of 6,292.5 metres and travels 3,143 metres above sea level, starting from the Muong Hoa Valley and reaching the peak of Fansipan Mountain.
It can carry 2,000 passengers per hour. Each train car can accommodate 30 to 35 people, helping shorten the journey to reach Fansipan’s summit in 15 minutes, instead of two days of dangerous trekking.
The cable car is expected to lure more tourists to Sa Pa, with officials expecting an annual increase of 40 per cent. By 2020, there could be up to three million visitors per year. The cable car is being targeted as the main tourist attraction for Sa Pa in the years ahead. — VNS
